Video Access Tour

winchester mystery house tours

Guests will guide themselves through the mansion that is famous for its dizzying floorplan and lack of formal blueprints… while in the dark and alone with just a flashlight. The Winchester Mystery House is a mansion in San Jose, California, that was once the personal residence of Sarah Winchester, the widow of firearms magnate William Wirt Winchester. The house became a tourist attraction nine months after Winchester's death in 1922. The Victorian and Gothic-style mansion is renowned for its size and its architectural curiosities and for the numerous myths and legends surrounding the structure and its former owner. Nearly 100 years after the house opened for tours, millions of guests have visited Sarah Winchester’s beautiful home. We’ve been mentioned in many “Top Destination” lists around the world.

GUIDED MANSION TOUR

Shortly after her husband’s death, Sarah left their home in New Haven, CT and moved out west to San Jose, CA. There, she bought an eight-room farmhouse and began what could only be described as the world’s longest home renovation, stopping only when Sarah passed on September 5, 1922. The general tours are not wheelchair accessible, but there is an ADA Tour that includes garden access. Complimentary parking is available both onsite and across the street. Winchester Mystery House™ offers complimentary parking to guests. Parking is available in the front lot, and there is overflow parking in the Santana Row garages across the street.

Parties for spirits

Experience a historic first as the Winchester Mystery House opens its doors to the public for an exclusive Paranormal Investigation within the darkened halls of the mansion. This is your chance to become an active participant in the world of the unexplained, as seen on your favorite paranormal shows & channels. Due to the historic nature of the Winchester Estate, the Mansion Tour is not wheelchair accessible. An ADA Tour is available for guests with mobility issues. The ADA tour includes a video tour and the self-guided Sarah Winchester Garden Tour. You will have the chance to roam the dark halls of the mansion while hearing tales of its former and (possibly current!) inhabitants.

Guests can go through this self-guided exploration with an audio guide and a digital map. Advance ticket purchase is required for the Garden Tour. Winchester Mystery House management and staff have worked extensively to prepare for reopening. The new self-guided tour has been designed to prioritize the safety of guests and staff and is compliant with all current county and state guidelines. Experience the Winchester Mystery House’s daily tour – Walk With Spirits – and explore the paranormal as explained through the Spiritualism movement.

She was certain that relocating was the only way to evade the spirits that plagued her. In 1886, she left her home in New Haven, CT, for a new life in San Jose, CA. There, she bought a simple eight-room farmhouse that she would go on to transform into a marvelous, madcap, 160-room mansion that would come to be known as the Winchester Mystery House. However, due to the exposed areas of the basement and the third floor, which require safety helmets, children under 5 are not permitted. It is recommended that children must be 5 and up and be able to walk unassisted. We do ask that any minor be accompanied with an adult at any time.

Those looking to explore even more of the beautiful but bizarre home of Sarah Winchester should book the Mansion Tour and spend more time in the gardens and gift shop.

Winchester could have been engaging in an eccentric brand of philanthropy, as she built her home during an economic depression, and the continuous construction project provided jobs for locals. When she died, in fact, the heiress left most of her money to charity. Some of the staircases in this home are truly peculiar.

This unique tour takes you beyond the ordinary, exploring areas of the house that you don’t see during the daily mansion tour. Children 4 years old and under are unable to take this tour. Light up your holiday with our Holiday Candlelight Tour!
